Avoid single-use plastic
Plastic pollution is a major environmental issue, with an estimated 5 trillion pieces of plastic in the world's oceans. The UK alone generates around 2.4 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, of which only 29% is recycled. Reducing the use of single-use plastics is one way we can all help to tackle this problem.
Understandably, avoiding single-use plastics in the UK can be challenging – as it's all around us, but there are several steps you can take to reduce your reliance on them:
- Bring your own reusable bags: Bring a reusable bag with you when you go shopping, rather than using single-use plastic bags.
- Use a refillable water bottle: Use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water, which often comes in single-use plastic bottles.
- Say no to straws: When you go out to eat or get a drink, ask for your beverage without a straw or bring your own reusable straw.
- Bring your own container: Bring your own containers to restaurants or food stalls for takeout or leftovers, rather than using single-use plastic containers.
- Avoid packaged fruits and vegetables: Choose loose fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged ones that often come in plastic containers or bags.
- Choose products with minimal packaging: Choose products with minimal packaging, or packaging made from biodegradable or compostable materials.
- Recycle properly: Make sure to recycle plastic products properly, according to the guidelines provided by your local council.
By taking these steps, you can significantly reduce your consumption of single-use plastics and help to protect the environment.
